Because of all those factors, a large part of the Japanese industry's strategy seems to be trying to find a middle ground. In the West, the balance has been skewed toward the loli and the moe (no surprise!) because moe's selling better and it's not controversial, in Japan, moe's still not OK, but it's no longer offensive or taboo-- and so it's getting somewhere. The otaku games are mostly moe/loli but with a more mature feel, sometimes with some genuinely funny moments after the main OTK action stops. Usually, you'll see games with strong otaku elements, then stronger loli elements, and then some gameplay mechanics to cater to the more Western-friendly gamer. (This is especially true on PC, which has traditionally been the market everyone can agree on (not that PC is perfect, but it's pretty darned safe.)) And that's been the strategy since the late 80s.
So it's funny to have all these games humanizing the otaku, and just seeing that the otaku haven't changed in the slightest. The America V Jinsei is 78, no matter how hard Japan tries to pussify it, it's still Otakudom 101.
Also, yeah, the whole pact with the Japanese Otaku who buy a lot of your games is an interesting one. I think that's part of what makes the Japanese industry so durable in a way: they know they've got that demographic to keep them in business, and they can afford to pass on stuff they don't like just because they predict it won't sell well. 7211a4ac4a
